Lagarde defends rate hikes as Trump calls Fed ‘crazy’

International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde came to the defence of central banks’ policy normalisation today (October 11), a day after US president Donald Trump called the Federal Reserve “crazy” for raising rates.

“[Normalisation] is clearly a necessary development for those economies that are now showing much improved growth, inflation that is picking up and falling into the range or reaching the thresholds, unemployment that is extremely low,” Lagarde told journalists at the IMF’s
