US may be over natural unemployment rate – Atlanta Fed president

The president of the Atlanta Federal Reserve says his estimate of US natural unemployment is lower than that of the Congressional Budget Office.

Raphael Bostic estimated the natural unemployment rate is between 4.2% and 4.3% in a speech on September 5. He says the US should be trying to move its policy back to a more neutral stance.

His estimate is above the current US unemployment rate of 3.9%, “but not a whole percentage point”, he says. In contrast, the Congressional Budget Office estimates
