Authorities can’t rely on monetary policy to fight next crisis – Rohde

Danish governor says rebuilding capital buffers should be a priority

Governments and central banks will not be able to rely on monetary policy when the next recession hits, but will have to ensure they can use other tools, Danish central bank governor Lars Rohde said today (March 1).

Negative rates and bond-buying programmes have successfully contributed to the economic recovery, Rohde told Central Banking’s National Asset-Liability Management Europe conference in London.

But rates remain low, Rohde noted, which is likely to prevent policy-makers from resorting
