Obituary: Alan Greenspan, 1926–2026

Alan Greenspan, the long-serving Federal Reserve chair known for helming the US central bank through several severe crises, has died aged 100.

His wife, broadcast journalist Andrea Mitchell, announced on June 22 that Greenspan had passed away due to complications from Parkinson’s disease.

Greenspan’s tenure at the Fed from 1987 to 2006 made him the second longest-serving chair, after William McChesney Martin. He was appointed to successive terms of office by four different presidents, both
