Suspended Bulgarian deputy appointed as caretaker PM

Country’s president says Gurov is only candidate not tainted by association with outgoing government

Bulgaria’s president, Iliana Iotova, has picked Andrey Gurov, the suspended deputy governor of the country’s central bank, to form a caretaker government.

In accepting the nomination today (February 12), Gurov described Bulgaria’s political environment as “highly abnormal”, and one in which “no one trusts anyone”. The president said she would issue the necessary decrees for elections to take place on April 19, provided Gurov had nominated cabinet members within a week.

Gurov was one of five people
