Iran replaces central bank governor amid mass protests

Abdolnasser Hemmati becomes monetary chief for second time as street demonstrations continue

Iran has appointed a new central bank governor, as mass protests in the country continue amid rising inflation and a depreciating currency.

The Iranian government on December 31 appointed Abdolnasser Hemmati, who had served as the country’s economic minister from August 2024 to March 2025, to lead the Central Bank of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Hemmati had previously been the central bank’s governor from 2018 to 2021. He succeeded Mohammad-Reza Farzin, who resigned on December 29 amid a mass
