Governor of Turkey’s central bank whose policies brought inflation down from 75% to single-digit figures
Süreyya Serdengeçti, who presided over a rare period of monetary stability in Turkey as governor of the country’s central bank, has died at the age of 73. He had been suffering from cancer.
Serdengeçti was appointed to head the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (CBRT) in March 2001 after a financial crisis triggered a devaluation of the lira and the resignation of the previous governor, Gazi Ercel. When he stepped down five years later, Central Banking wrote that under his tenure the CBRT
