US president Joe Biden will name Lael Brainard director of the National Economic Council this week, perhaps as early as today (February 14), several media outlets have reported.

The appointment would remove one of the Federal Reserve’s most senior policy-makers. Brainard, the central bank’s vice-chair, has championed tougher financial regulation during nearly 10 years on the Fed board.
