People: BIS names chair; IMF appoints chief economist

Basel: François Villeroy de Galhau was elected as chair of the board at the Bank for International Settlements on January 12. He replaces Jens Weidmann, who has now stepped down as president of the Deutsche Bundesbank and given up his BIS responsibilities.

De Galhau, governor of the Banque de France, will serve a three-year, renewable term as chair. He will chair the committee alongside Stefan Ingves, governor of Sveriges Riksbank, who was appointed vice-chair in November.
