Belize governor resigns after 19 weeks

The Central Bank of Belize announced on August 13 that its governor, Gustavo Manuel Vasquez, had resigned effective immediately. Vasquez had only assumed the governorship on April 1.

The central bank’s statement does not indicate why Vasquez resigned. Belizean media reports describe disputes between Vasquez and the CBB board of directors. The board is the “policy-making organ of the bank”, while the governor is its “chief executive officer”.

According to the CBB press release, prime minister
