Peru’s likely president-elect will reappoint Velarde

The leftist candidate currently leading Peru’s hotly contested presidential election said on June 26 he would reappoint Julio Velarde as governor of the central bank.

In an address in Lima, Pedro Castillo said, “we respect governability. In that context, I ask Dr Julio Velarde that his work be permanent [and] consistent at the head of the BCRP [Central Reserve Bank of Peru]”.

Castillo, whose slender election victory is currently subject to a legal challenge from his main rival, added the
