Iran governor registers for presidential run

Hemmati one of nearly 600 candidates for June vote who now face screening from Guardian Council

On May 15, the governor of the Iranian central bank, Abdolnaser Hemmati, filed his candidacy to run in the upcoming Iranian presidential elections.

Hemmati joined a large number of high-profile figures registering their candidacies on the deadline for nominations, according to reports in the Iranian media. The election will be held on June 18.

The winner will succeed the moderate incumbent, Hassan Rouhani, in August, as he has served the maximum two consecutive terms.
