Yakiv Smolii confirmed as Ukrainian governor

Ukraine’s parliament voted to confirm Yakiv Smolii as the permanent governor of the country’s central bank, after he had held the job for 10 months on an acting basis.

Smolii became interim governor of the National Bank of Ukraine when Valeria Gontareva resigned in May 2017 after three years in the role. He was nominated for the role of permanent governor by Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko in December that year.

Local observers said Poroshenko had been unable to get sufficient
