Former MNB chief accuses central bank of historical ‘blackmail’

Simor says lender was threatened with closer supervision because of his position on its board

András Simor, a former governor of the Central Bank of Hungary (MNB), has accused it of having blackmailed the CEO of a commercial lender because of Simor’s own position on the firm’s supervisory council.

Simor told news outlet ATV on April 22 that he had been forced to leave the supervisory council of Erste Group Bank after the MNB’s then deputy governor threatened the Austrian lender’s Hungarian affiliate with heightened supervision “as long as he [Simor] was in his position”.
