Trump tries to remove Fed governor Lisa Cook

President says mortgage applications by Cook constitute “due cause” for her removal

The president of the US is trying to remove Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook from her position with immediate effect.

Donald Trump posted a copy of a letter dated August 25 on his social media platform addressed to Cook, in which he says that Cook’s “deceitful and potentially criminal conduct in a financial matter” calls into question her “competence and trustworthiness as a financial regulator”.

Trump wrote that he had “determined that faithfully executing the law requires [Cook’s] immediate
