Afghan central bank ‘worsened crisis’, says leaked document

International officials allege “mismanagement” under Ahmady led to loss of dollars

Senior international officials allege the mismanagement of Afghanistan’s central bank before the Taliban takeover has worsened the country’s economic crisis, Reuters has reported.

Officials wrote a two-page report to brief the World Bank, International Monetary Fund and other organisations, Reuters said on September 29. The report said that “FX [foreign exchange] reserves in CB’s [central bank] vaults in Kabul have depleted”, meaning “the CB cannot meet… cash requests”.

The report continued:
