World’s longest-serving governor given further term

Mugur Isărescu, in office since 1990, will serve again after overcoming political hostility

Romania’s parliament has voted to give a further five-year term to Mugur Isărescu, who is already the longest-serving of any current central bank governor.

Isărescu won the support of Romania’s coalition government despite a bitter recent dispute with a powerful faction in its biggest party. The faction that opposed him, in the governing Social Democratic Party, was led by Liviu Dragnea, who was jailed on corruption charges in May.
