Bolsonaro intrudes into Brazil’s economic institutions

Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro ramped up his attacks on the country’s institutions over the weekend.

On June 16, Joaquim Levy resigned as president of the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) after Bolsonaro threatened to fire him if he did not withdraw a director’s appointment at the institution.

“I am fed up with Levy. I told him: fire that guy on Monday, or I will fire you,” Bolsonaro told reporters on June 15, according to the Folha de São Paulo.
