Flug defends Bank of Israel’s role as government economic adviser

Departing governor clashed with executive over public spending priorities

Outgoing governor of the Bank of Israel Karnit Flug argued in favour of the institution’s role as economic adviser to the government in her farewell speech on November 4.

The BoI’s governor has a unique mandate among central banks to act as a point of reference to the Israeli government in fiscal and other economic matters. During her tenure, Flug has not shied away from questioning the sustainability of the executive’s fiscal plans.
