US Treasury secretary accuses IMF and World Bank of ‘mission creep’

Bessent says organisations should focus on core goals rather than issues such as climate change

The US Treasury secretary has accused the International Monetary Fund and World Bank of “mission creep” and “expansive policy overreach”.  

At the IMF’s Spring Meetings on April 23 and in a speech later that day before the Institute of International Finance, Scott Bessent said the mission of both organisations was to restore balance in the global economy, and that today’s apparent imbalance was evidence of their failure.  

Bessent lamented the IMF’s work on issues related to climate change, gender
