
UK unfreezes Syrian central bank assets
Decision follows similar move by EU, though US sanctions remain in place

The UK government announced yesterday (March 6) that it was lifting a freeze on assets belonging to the Central Bank of Syria.
A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said the government had lifted the freezing of assets belonging to two dozen Syrian entities, including the central bank. The assets, it said, had been used by deposed former president Bashar al-Assad’s regime “to fund the oppression of the Syrian people”.
