IMF modifies deal with Argentina

Fund disburses $7.5 billion ahead of elections despite finding government failed to meet some targets

The International Monetary Fund’s executive board has agreed to disburse $7.5 billion to Argentina despite the government failing to meet targets, it announced on August 23.

The move comes ahead of Argentina’s presidential election, due for October 22, in which one leading candidate has vowed to dollarise the economy. The IMF executive board said it had modified some of the key targets it set for Argentina under its extended fund facility deal, agreed in March 2022.
