Hernández de Cos encourages banks to use capital buffers

Basel Committee chair says it is “only a matter of time” before losses become apparent

Banks should resort to their capital and liquidity buffers to maintain credit as the coronavirus crisis continues, says Pablo Hernández de Cos, chair of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision.

The Bank of Spain governor added that it may be premature to assess the effectiveness of these buffers in a recent interview with Central Banking.
