Euro carves out role as currency of choice for green finance


The euro is demonstrating its credentials as the currency of choice for green finance worldwide, though it remains far behind the US dollar as a global currency more broadly, a report by the European Central Bank finds.

The ECB’s annual report on euro internationalisation highlights that the euro was the most common currency of denomination for green bonds issued in 2019. It accounted for 45.4% of issuance, against 25.7% in dollars and 28.9% in other currencies.
