Italian governor warns country must not abandon EU rules

Former IMF official named as interim prime minister by Italy’s president

The governor of the Bank of Italy issued a grave warning that the country could be seriously damaged if political leaders abandon the laws of the European Union.

Ignazio Visco’s words came a day after the country’s president refused to allow an opponent of the EU to serve as Italy’s finance minister and called upon a former International Monetary Fund official to form an interim government.

The “rules of the game” set out by the EU “can be debated, even criticised”, and “can surely be improved
