National statistical agencies must measure informal economy – IMF


The International Monetary Fund is urging national statistical agencies to gather information on the informal economy.

As part of a new research exercise, the IMF notes the policy implications of the informal economy “make it imperative that reliable estimates are available on a regular basis and in a timely manner”.

The Covid-19 pandemic, the IMF says, has exacerbated the need to understand the effect crises have on informal workers, who have been shown to be more vulnerable. Such workers are
