US SMEs less fazed by tariff turmoil – Boston Fed survey

Study suggests further uncertainty over levies would no longer cause firms’ outlook to deteriorate

The effect of tariff uncertainty on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the US may have peaked in April, research from the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston argues.

The bank surveyed businesses in December 2024 and in February and late April of this year. It found that uncertainty among respondents had risen markedly between the first and the third of these surveys.

However, while the first two surveys found that uncertainty was causing businesses’ expectations about the economy to worsen
