Access to cash must be protected – Bundesbank’s Balz
Board member says digital euro is ‘no silver bullet’ in payments landscape
A member of the Deutsche Bundesbank’s executive board has called on central banks to safeguard the status of cash.
In a speech in Washington on May 13, Burkhard Balz said monetary authorities should actively monitor cash machines, bank branches and other cash access points to identify regions and groups of people who were at risk of losing access to hard currency.
Central banks, Balz said, should also support “innovative distribution models”, such as cash withdrawals at retailers, shared ATM
