The Bundesbank plans to close 13 of its 48 cash-processing centres by 2015, said Hans Fabritius, a member of the central bank's Executive Board.

Fabritius said the closures would reduce the cost of cash management significantly. He also said the central bank wanted to open up half of its cash recycling business to the private sector and that commercial banks should increase the number of ATMs with incorporated cash-recycling functions. He said there were 3,500 of these in Germany at the moment
