IMF's Lipsky backs countercyclical fiscal policy

Countercyclical fiscal policies may have to be used alongside monetary policy in order to combat the impact of the expected global slowdown, John Lipsky, the first deputy managing director of the International Monetary Fund, said.

"We are advising our members to consider whether they have room to adopt temporary fiscal measures, if needed," John Lipsky, adding that in the current environment, there was a risk that monetary policy will prove to be less effective than in the past episodes.
