Edgar Meister: Challenges for regulators in Europe

At a joint Bundesbank/BIS conference in Frankfurt, Mr Edgar Meister, member of the directorate of the Deutsche Bundesbank, gives a speech on "Recent developments in financial systems and the challenges for economic policy".

Edgar Meister begins his speech by noting that in eight of the eleven countries of the Eurosystem the central bank is either responsible for conducting banking supervision or plays an important role in it. He says that a stable financial system and especially a stable banking
