Useful statement from Jean-Claude Trichet is pleased to see the ECB making constructive use of its website in the current crisis. On Tuesday August 14 its home page featured prominently a statement by Jean-Claude Trichet, the president, about the current financial market situation (as reported in the News section of this service).

This may have been prompted partly by a desire on the part of the ECB's leaders to rebut whispered criticism in the markets that it over-reacted to the crisis at the end of last week. But
