It seems that a trial may now be on pitting Jean-Claude Trichet, governor of France's central bank, against Philippe Courroye, France's top magistrate. Off, as a result, is Mr Trichet's once-sure appointment to the presidency of the European Central Bank (ECB) next summer. On July 15th Mr Courroye ruled that Mr Trichet and eight others must answer for
