Sir, With reference to your editorial "Apres Trichet" and article "More trouble for Trichet" (17 July): the principles applied to Valery Giscard d'Estaing and Jacques Chirac should also be applied eventually to nominating Jean-Claude Trichet as president of the European Central Bank. The European Union chose Mr Giscard d'Estaing to head the European Union Convention despite the scandals
