Barroso to ECB: do 'whatever is necessary' to maintain financial stability

José Manuel Barroso, the president of the European Commission, on Wednesday said the European Central Bank msut do "whatever is necessary" to maintain financial stability in the eurozone.

In his annual State of the Union speech to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, Barroso used stronger language than in past appearances to urge Europe to come together to face its biggest challenge in its 50-year history.

He demanded closer economic cooperation among European Union members, saying an
