Ailing Belarus governor released from office

Yury Alymov is acting chairman of the board

On Tuesday, the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus released a statement that said president Alyaksandr Lukashenka had released governor Pyotr Prokopovich from office, "in view of his retirement".

Prokopovich was hospitalised with cardiac problems earlier this year and, on June 20, Yury Alymov was named as acting chairman of the board at the central bank.

The change comes at a time when Belarus is facing economic strife. In March this year, the rating agency Moody's cut Belarus's sovereign
