Brazil unveils first of new family of banknotes

The Central Bank of Brazil on Monday released the first two denominations in its new series of banknotes.

The central bank unveiled the R50 ($29.46) and R100 notes, the first to be released in the second series of real notes, at a ceremony at its headquarters in Brasilia.

The new R50 notes cost 23.83 centavos to produce, the new R100 notes 24.75 centavos. The costs are 35% more than those of producing the first series of these notes. The central bank has so far printed 42m of the R50 notes and
