Argentina surprises with new governor

Mercedes Marcó del Pont, formerly the head of the state-owned Banco de la Nación Argentina, was named head of the south American country's central bank in an unexpected twist on Wednesday.

Cristina Fernández, the Argentine president, said Marcó del Pont would take over in a press conference where she also formalised the sacking of Martín Redrado after a congressional commission supported his removal on 7 January by executive decree. Investors were shocked and Buenos Aires's benchmark Merval
