Nobel Laureates, GS head sign Fed independence petition

An online petition aimed at persuading Congress to safeguard the Federal Reserve's monetary independence has attracted support from a plethora of prominent US economists.

The petition - which warns that limiting independence would stoke inflation, politicise lender of last resort decisions and dampen the prospects for an economic recovery - had as of Wednesday been signed by 252 people.

Among the signatories were Daniel McFadden, Robert Merton and Eric Maskin, all Nobel Laureates. Lloyd Blankfei
