Gold price soars on war talk concerns

Worries that US Secretary of State Colin Powell's speech on Iraq could be a harbinger of war sent gold soaring to a six-and-a-half year high on Wednesday as investors piled into the traditional safe haven in times of trouble.

Crude oil prices also climbed, building on a spurt in U.S. trading on Tuesday, and the dollar was mired in a razor-thin range around 119.6 yen as traders braced for Powell's speech at a U.N. Security Council session starting at 10:30 a.m. EST.
