Gieve warns of losing inflation battle

John Gieve, a deputy governor at the Bank of England, has warned that the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) could lose the battle against inflation if it took a more gradual approach to raising interest rates.

"If we get behind the curve, gradualism in monetary policy could compound problems," Gieve said in a speech in London on 24 July. His comments contrasted with those of his fellow deputy governor, Rachel Lomax, who said recently that the central bank should be careful not to "overdo it" in
