Singapore appoints new managing director for MAS

Tharman Shanmugaratnam has been been appointed managing director of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) for a two-year term from April 1. Mr Tharman, who is now No 2 at the de facto central bank, replaces Koh Yong Guan, who has headed MAS since January 1998. Mr Koh, 54, will assume the post of permanent secretary at the Ministry of National Development on April 1, but will remain on the MAS board.
