Strong dollar message "very important": Trichet

Jean-Claude Trichet, the president of the European Central Bank, said it was "very important" that the US underlined its message that a strong dollar was in the US national interest.

But Alistair Darling, the UK chancellor of the exchequer dampened speculation that the G7 would try to influence the dollar's value when he said that markets, not officials, should resolve issues of currency valuation.
