ECB's biannual information on euro counterfeiting

The European Central Bank revealed on Thursday 13 January that in the second half of 2004, a total of 287,000 counterfeit euro banknotes were withdrawn from circulation, both in euro area and in non-euro area countries.

This figure is to be compared with that for the first half of the year, when around 307,000 counterfeits were recovered. Thus, the total for the year 2004 as a whole was around 594,000 counterfeits. Although this is an increase of about 8% on the 2003 figure, the recent trend has
