Court battle may loom over EU Pact

EU finance ministers reportedly acted illegally when they suspended EU budget rules to spare France and Germany disciplinary action over their excessive deficits.

Sources said that European Union Commissioner Pedro Solbes is to recommend the EU executive challenge the November decision at the European Court of Justice.

The challenge would be on the basis of the lawyers' opinion, the sources said.

Mr Solbes's spokesman, Gerassimos Thomas, refused to comment on the content of the legal opinion.
