Eichel says EU 3% deficit limit to stay in revamp

German Finance Minister Hans Eichel said Monday 17 January that planned changes to European Union rules that limit budget deficits and debt levels in the euro region won't alter the two existing numerical thresholds.

``What we will not change is the Maastricht Treaty's wording, especially not the wording on the 3 percent of gross domestic product on deficits and 60 percent of GDP on debt,'' Eichel told reporters in Berlin.

Speaking before a meeting in Brussels on Monday evening, he said a debate
