Germany's Steinbrueck backs ECB's independence

German finance minister Peer Steinbrueck said Wednesday 7 February that the independence of the European Central Bank, which has received criticism from some French politicians, must be respected.

"The independence of the ECB and of the national central banks, as well as their overriding obligation to price stability, are guaranteed and must be respected by everyone," Steinbrueck said in a speech.

"It is for this reason that the euro will remain a stable currency in future," the minister added.
