Bank of France pressed to close down branches

The Bank of France is considering a drastic overhaul of its extensive presence throughout the country, closing the bulk of its 211 branches. The sharp cutbacks in the bank's activities are proposed in a report handed in to Jean-Claude Trichet, the governor, last Friday, reports the Financial Times.

The trades unions claimed at the weekend that 3,200 of the bank's 14,000 staff were at risk of losing their jobs. Their concerns were shared by the national association of mayors who were worried about
