Thailand rejects IMF interest rate advice

THAILAND - Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra on 17 August rebuffed an IMF suggestion that Thailand should not rule out cutting interest rates, saying rates were already low enough despite the need to boost the faltering economy.

"There is no need for any rate cuts as our rates are already quite low," Thaksin told reporters in response to a report by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Thursday which said the Thai economic recovery was fragile and subject to downside risk.
