Canada names special advisers

The Bank of Canada has appointed two economics professors as its special advisers on monetary policy for the coming year.

The central bank has hired Angelo Melino, a professor at the University of Toronto's economics department, and Frank Milne, a professor at Queen's University's economics department, to bring additional perspectives to its monetary policy discussions.

Melino will work at the central bank between September 2008 and April next year. He will conduct research into areas related to the central bank's monetary policy and financial system functions, including investigating potential welfare gains from price-level targeting.

His academic work has covered macroeconomics, asset pricing and econometrics.

Milne will work from September 2008 until June 2009. He will investigate issues related to the recent turbulence in global financial markets. Research interests include asset and derivative pricing, the theory of the firm and management control mechanisms, non-standard preferences, and the public policy response to banking and financial intermediation issues.
